Grow Berlin Green Recruiting Neighborhood Teams for De-litter Your Ditch Event
Berlin, Maryland, May 26, 2009 — Grow Berlin Green (GBG), a new campaign to promote conservation and environmental protection in the Town of Berlin is looking to recruit teams of volunteers for its first community clean-up event to on June 6 at 9:00 a.m.
The plan is for residents to meet at the Coffee Beanery in the James Barrett Building and form teams of volunteers to pick up trash in their neighborhood ditches. GBG representatives will be on hand to provide bags and a truck to haul the trash away.
“Citizen involvement is at the core of the Grow Berlin Green campaign and a clean-up event seems like a great way to kick start our community engagement effort,” explains GBG Director Steve Farr. “Drainage ditches criss-cross almost every neighborhood in town and are virtual magnets for trash,” Farr continued. “If we don’t clean them out, the trash will eventually end up polluting our creeks and bays, and nobody wants to see that happen.”
While GBG will roll out a series of similar events over the course of the three-year campaign, the goal is to get citizens to keep their neighborhoods clean without the need for outside encouragement. “Whether it’s cleaning out a ditch, recycling, or conserving energy, we hope that GBG can be a catalyst to nudge people into action,” Farr said. “But our ultimate goal is to make such activities a regular part of everybody’s daily life.”
Berlin residents interested in leading or participating in a neighborhood team for the De-Litter Your Ditch event should contact Steve Farr at 410-629-1538 or growberlingreen@hotmail.com.
