(May 4, 2012) Worcester County Tourism named the 2012 Worcester Green Award winners during the Hotel- Motel- Restaurant Association dinner meeting on April 19. Worcester Green awards are presented to area businesses dedicated to sustainable environmental practices, such as water conservation, wastewater management, alternative transportation and transit, recycling, energy conservation, on-site renewable energy production, use of local products and food sources and the purchase of renewable energy.
PINES PLANT LOSES MDE EXEMPTION
SNOW HILL — As the result of a Maryland Department of the Environment fee levied on the Ocean Pines Sanitary Service Area, residents will receive a $15 bump in their sewer bills this June. The $2.50 per-user-per-month fee is applied to users of facilities with heightened nitrogen levels as part of a mechanism for funding the Bay Restoration Fund. Although many jurisdictions pay this fee, users in the Ocean Pines area have been exempt from it because of the plant’s efficiency.
PINES RECYCLING SUCCESS MAY MEAN CONTEST WIN
OCEAN PINES — Ocean Piners kept 73,540 pounds or about 37 tons of recyclables out of landfills during the community’s first month of recycling.
“That’s a huge number,” General Manager Bob Thompson told a group of approximately 45 people gathered at the Yacht Club last Thursday evening to learn about recycling.

BERLIN -- The third bi-annual Operation Medicine Drop event, part of the Drug Enforcement Agency National Drug Take Back Day program, held last weekend resulted in a total of 218 pounds of unused or expired medications being turned in by residents for proper and environmentally safe disposal. This was a slight increase over the Fall 2011 Worcester County Operation Medicine Drop.

TerraCycling; Up-Cycling Nontraditional Trash
TerraCycling began as a process that turns worn waste products and packages into reused containers using fertilizer, worms, and compostation. In 2007, TerraCycle changed their business plan slightly. They began producing pouches, bags, and accessories made from up-cycled drink pouches and candy wrappers. Larger items that were non-recyclable were also up-cycled and used to create flowerpots, plastic lumber, pavers, benches, and garbage pails.
TRAIL PLAN IN WORKS FOR BERLIN AREA
(March 30, 2012) A master plan for trails in the Berlin area is expected to be ready by late May.
Kate Patton, executive director of the Lower Shore Land Trust, told the Berlin Town Council that she and others have been working on the plan for a trail system for the past nine months. She recently obtained the support of the Lower Eastern Shore Heritage Council and the Worcester County Health Department.

BERLIN -- Last week’s Operation Medicine Drop, in conjunction with the fall National Drug Take-Back Day, was a huge success, netting a total of 205 pounds of unused and expired medications.
Local officials from the Worcester County Sheriff’s Office, the Worcester County Health Department, Ocean City Police, Berlin Police and the Assateague Coastal Trust and Coastkeeper participated in Operation Medicine Drop last Saturday at various locations around the local area. Local residents dropped off a total of 205 pounds of unused prescription medications at the designated sites. By contrast, 130 pounds of pills were dropped off during the inaugural event last spring.

The projects will engage students, school staff and parents in the planting and garden care process, including the development of after-school and summertime garden clubs at one or both schools.

Environmental group Grow Berlin Green (GBG) has created a green mindset by teaching and engaging the community. Although centered in the town, Program Director Steve Farr said the environmental impact of GBG extends beyond town limits in terms of education and awareness.

Bottle Branch is one of three streams carrying water from the town to the bay. This once-small ditch is prone to flooding and has eroded land on either side so that even nearby houses are sagging toward it.

UPCYCLED TREE DEBUTS
December 2010 -Among the highlights of the Berlin Christmas Parade was Grow Berlin Green's float that featured an up-cycled tree, which was constructed of 999 recycled plastic bottles.
The tree was decorated with garland made from styro popcorn, thanks to the Berlin Intermediate School "after school program" along with the help of Jeanie Davis, a 4-H instructor. Gifts and presents up-cycled from aluminum cans added color and flavor to the tree. The tree will be on display on the second floor of the Globe through the holidays.

September 17, 2010- Grow Berlin Green, a campaign to promote conservation and environmental protection in the town, wants people's trash. Well, not all of it.
Grow Berlin Green is asking people to save foil drink pouches, yogurt cups, candy wrappers, energy bar wrappers, potato chip bags, toothpaste tubes, beauty product tubes, tape dispensers, corks and more. After saving some of that trash, people are asked to take it to Berlin and deposit it in one of two trash containers next to the paper and cardboard recycling container at the recycle area of John Howard Burbage Park on Williams Street.

GBG COMPLETES FIRST RAIN GARDEN
June 18, 2009, Berlin MD- Grow Berlin Green completed its’ first Rain Garden on Saturday at the corner of Broad Street and Harrison Avenue, during the Village Fair Festival.
“That corner is one of several areas in Berlin where drainage is a problem,” describes Program Coordinator Steve Farr. “Rain gardens increase the amount of water that filters into the ground and slows the flow. The pooling of water which usually occurs after a rainfall at that corner should significantly be diminished.”
GBG AND TOWN OF BERLIN GO GREEN FOR VILLAGE FAIR
June 8, 2009, Berlin MD- Grow Berlin Green (GBG) and the Town of Berlin have joined forces to add onto Saturdays’ Berlin Village Fair by offering a variety of fun-filled and educational activities on the lawn of the Calvin B. Taylor Museum. Spread over the course of the day, these activities will include:
Rain Barrel Rage – The Town of Berlin is building rain barrels from recycled barrels donated by Short’s Marine and will be making them available to Berlin residents for $20 while supplies last. Residents of the town can pre-order barrels (one per household) by calling Steve Farr at 410-629-1538 or sending an email to growberlingreen@hotmail.com.
GROW BERLIN GREEN RECRUITING NEIGHBORHOOD TEAMS FOR DE-LITTER YOUR DITCH EVENT
Berlin, Maryland, May 26, 2009 — Grow Berlin Green (GBG), a new campaign to promote conservation and environmental protection in the Town of Berlin is looking to recruit teams of volunteers for its first community clean-up event to on June 6 at 9:00 a.m.
The plan is for residents to meet at the Coffee Beanery in the James Barrett Building and form teams of volunteers to pick up trash in their neighborhood ditches. GBG representatives will be on hand to provide bags and a truck to haul the trash away.
GROW BERLIN GREEN LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN AT SPRING CELEBRATION
Berlin, Maryland, April 11, 2009 — Grow Berlin Green (GBG), launched the campaign to promote conservation and environmental protection in Berlin with an information booth, rain barrel raffle and re-usable shopping bag giveaway at Saturday’s Spring Celebration event.
GBG’s booth offered general information about the campaign goals and plans, and educational materials about rain barrels, rain gardens and household conservation tips. Visitors to the booth could purchase chances to win a rain barrel to conserve water and curtail stormwater runoff, and received a free cloth shopping bag adorned with the GBG logo along with those of its partners, the Town of Berlin and its Main Street program.
BERLIN GREEN AWARDS SCHOOL CONFERENCE SCHOLARSHIPS
Berlin, Maryland, March 16, 2009 — Grow Berlin Green (GBG), a new campaign created to establish Berlin, Maryland as a model community for participatory environmental protection, conservation and smart growth policy and practice, awarded four area teachers a conference scholarship to attend this year’s MAEOE conference, The Maryland Association for Environmental and Outdoor Education.
BERLIN GROWING GREEN WITH NEW COMMUNITY CAMPAIGN
A program designed to highlight the town of Berlin as a model community for environmental protection and conservation is ready to go after receiving funding from a philanthropic group.
Grow Berlin Green (GBG) is a three-year campaign to encourage Berlin residents, businesses and government officials to connect the community to conservation. Toward that effort, GBG recently received $125,000 from the Town Creek Foundation, a private, philanthropic organization dedicated to a sustainable environment.
