Where We’ve Been
The GBG campaign was introduced at a Town Hall meeting February 10th, 2009 and received enthusiastic encouragement from meeting attendees.

Now approaching the end of our second year, in our efforts to establish Berlin, MD as a model community for participatory environmental protection, conservation and smart growth policy and practice, we are moving forward with some pretty successful programs.

Partnering with the town of Berlin, local businesses and a core of volunteers, more than 200 rainbarrels have been assembled and distributed. This year Berlin students will be involved in painting some of the barrels and creating informational flyers through an environmental learning program to distribute to residents in 2011.

Berlin's Parks Commission partnered with GBG to establish the annual "Take Pride in Berlin"  Spring Clean up Day which was recognized by the Community Foundation as one of the top five successful clean up events. Next years event is slated for April 23, 2011.

After months of efforts, GBG and the Town of Berlin rolled in the Business recycling service where area business have access to recycle for free! GBG and Berlin Main Street program purchased the large recycling container now located behind the Globe and Berlin's Public Works Director Mike Gibbons working with Worcester County to orchestrated a trash pickup schedule!

In an effort to spread the word about our efforts, educate, mobilize citizen action and  promote various town activities, and events, GBG began airing a major public service announcement campaign on Public Radio Delmarva. Tune your radio to WSDL at 90.7 FM or WSCL at 89.5 to sample our educational messages over the next year!

Everyone knows that flooding after rainstorms is a problem in Berlin.  But did you know that stormwater runoff is also a major source of pollution to our creeks and bays?  In an effort to help the Town consider cutting-edge cures to both of these issues, GBG is commissioning a study to evaluate new stormwater management strategies.  The study will identify stormwater “hot spots” in the Town, identify new technologies best suited to address these areas, and present recommendations for how the Town can implement these measures in a cost-effective manner.  The timing of the study coincides with the anticipated adoption this Spring by the Town Council of a new stormwater management ordinance regulating runoff control from all new development.
